Science News Desk – Just 11 minutes a day or 75 minutes a week of walking or moderate physical activity can help reduce the risk of many serious diseases, including heart disease and cancer. This has been said in a new research led by Cambridge University. In a study published Tuesday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers concluded that one in 10 early deaths could be prevented if everyone did half the amount of physical activity recommended by Britain’s National Health Service (NHS). Moderate physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer, and the NHS recommends adults do 75 minutes of moderate physical activity a week. Dr Soren Braj, from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, said: “It is better to take part in some physical activity than doing nothing. If you think you can do 75 minutes of physical activity a week, If you can, you should gradually increase activity to the recommended level.

Most of the deaths worldwide are due to heart related diseases. In the year 2019, 1.79 crore people died due to heart diseases whereas in 2017, 96 lakh people died due to cancer. According to the study, 75 minutes of physical activity a week reduces the risk of heart diseases by 17 percent and the risk of cancer by seven percent.
